Venezuela air travel situation: alternate airports, routes, and passenger options

Published Updated · 8 min read

Last updated: July 9, 2026. This guide consolidates the updates published through that date about Venezuela's air operation after the June 24 earthquakes and the disruption at Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía (CCS). Routes and passenger-protection measures can change; always confirm with the airline before going to the airport.

The seismic emergency forced Venezuela's air connectivity to reorganize in a matter of days. Instead of tracking separate airline-by-airline posts, this page brings the practical picture together: which airports are absorbing operations, which routes have been redirected or activated, and what each passenger should verify before traveling.

Quick passenger summary

  • Maiquetía (CCS): remains operationally affected; check whether your flight now uses another airport.
  • Valencia (VLN): is handling much of the international traffic redirected from Caracas, especially links with Spain, Colombia, and Portugal.
  • Barcelona, Anzoátegui (BLA): is working as a second alternate hub for international routes and links to Miami, Madrid, Bogotá, and Santo Domingo.
  • Maracay (MYC) and Barquisimeto (BRM): support domestic mobility and selected contingency flights.
  • Main recommendation: do not assume your ticket keeps the same airport; check airport, schedule, change policy, and ground transfer.

Airports supporting the contingency

Domestic connections inside Venezuela

The domestic network also reorganized to support internal mobility. Conviasa, Estelar, Rutaca, and Avior appear within the contingency scheme with operations from Valencia, Barquisimeto, Barcelona, Porlamar, Maracaibo, and El Vigía. Rutaca also reinforced the Valencia-Barcelona corridor with daily service during the emergency.

Maracay regained commercial flights after six years without regular service, initially with Conviasa to Los Roques and plans to add domestic destinations. That does not make Maracay a full replacement for Maiquetía, but it does expand options for passengers in central Venezuela.

What to do if your ticket is affected

  1. Check the airport on your booking: CCS may have changed to VLN, BLA, BRM, or MYC.
  2. Confirm the schedule on the travel day: operational adjustments can change because of logistics, crew, or aircraft availability.
  3. Ask about protection before buying another ticket: some airlines have offered date changes, destination changes, rebooking, or vouchers depending on the case.
  4. Plan the ground transfer: reaching Valencia or Barcelona can add several hours from Caracas or other cities.
  5. Keep evidence: save airline or agency statements, emails, receipts, and screenshots.

Emergency context

The June 24, 2026 earthquakes triggered a national state of emergency and a broad logistics response. For travelers, it is useful to separate two issues: humanitarian assistance and infrastructure repair on one side, and the concrete operation of your flight on the other. For travel purposes, the most important points are airport, schedule, protection policy, and transfer.
