Migración Colombia has decreed a temporary closure of the country's land and river border crossings for the second round of the presidential election, held on Sunday, June 21, 2026. The measure was explained by Gloria Esperanza Arriero López, General Director of Migración Colombia.
When does the closure apply?
The restriction is in effect from 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 20 until 6:00 a.m. on Monday, June 22, 2026. During that window, transit through the country's authorized land and river border crossings is suspended.
Which borders are affected?
The measure covers only land and river crossings — for example, the main crossings with Venezuela (such as Cúcuta or Paraguachón) and with Ecuador (Rumichaca/Ipiales), among other authorized points.
It does not cover airports or international flights, which are not part of this restriction. Even so, if you're flying that weekend, always confirm your schedules with the airline.
Why are the borders closing?
The closure is part of Plan Democracia 2026, an inter-institutional strategy led by the National Government to protect the democratic process and ensure the safe, orderly running of the elections. Its legal basis is Decree 0612 of June 16, 2026.
According to Gloria Arriero, General Director of Migración Colombia: “This decision reflects the State's commitment to protecting national security and the guarantees for the democratic process.”
Exceptions
According to Migración Colombia, the restriction will not apply in duly substantiated cases of force majeure or unforeseen circumstances (for example, verified medical emergencies or other urgent situations).
What it means for you
- If you plan to cross by land or river between Colombia and a neighboring country this weekend, factor in the closure window and, if possible, adjust your trip to cross before 6:00 p.m. Saturday the 20th or after 6:00 a.m. Monday the 22nd.
- If you're flying, the measure doesn't restrict airports, but confirm your itinerary with the airline.
- Carry valid travel documents and allow extra time for the security controls typical of an election weekend.
Keep in mind that elections usually come with other measures, such as “ley seca” (a temporary ban on alcohol sales), as set by local authorities.
